ACT: A test published by American College Testing to
measure a student's ability in math, verbal comprehension and problem solving. Usually
students take this test during their junior or senior year of high school. (ACT)
CREDIT: Recognition of attendance or
performance in an instructional activity (course or program) that can be applied by a
recipient toward the requirements for a degree, diploma, certificate, or other formal
award. (IPEDS)
CREDIT COURSE: A course that, if successfully completed, can be
applied toward the number of courses required for achieving a degree, diploma,
certificate, or other formal award. (IPEDS)
DEGREE-SEEKING STUDENTS: Students enrolled in courses
for credit who are recognized by the institution as seeking a degree or formal award.

DISTINGUISHED CHAIRS AND PROFESSORS
- Boyd Professors: Faculty members who are designated as Boyd Professors
have attained both national and international distinction for outstanding teaching,
research, or other creative achievement. The Boyd Professorship is the highest
professorial rank awarded by the University. (LSU General Catalog)
- Alumni Professors: Selection as an Alumni Professor is based on
reputation for excellence in instruction, especially in undergraduate teaching; record of
active and continuing interest and participation in areas of professor-student relations;
dedication to an academic field; and outstanding professional relationships with other
faculty and staff members. (LSU General Catalog)
EDUCATIONAL & GENERAL EXPENDITURE FUNCTIONS
- Academic Support: Funds used primarily to provide support services for
the institution's primary missions--instruction, research, public service. This includes:
Libraries, Educational media servcies, Academic computing support, Ancillary support,
Academic administration, Course and curriculum development. (NACUBO)
- Institutional Support: Includes expenditures for: central
executive-level activities concerned with management and long-range planning of the entire
institution, fiscal operations, administrative data processing, space management,
personnel, logistical activities, and support services to faculty and staff. (NACUBO)
- Instruction: All activities that are part of an institution's
instruction program. Expenditures would include credit and noncredit courses, academic,
vocational, technical instruction, remedial, special, and extension sessions. (NACUBO)
- Operation and Maintenance of Plant: All expenditures of current
operating funds for the operation and maintenance of physical plant. Includes: Physical
plant administration, Building maintenance, Custodial services, Utilities, Landscape and
grounds maintenance, Major repairs and renovations. (NACUBO)
- Public Service: All funds expended for activities that are established
primarily to provide noninstructional services beneficial to individuals and groups
external to the insitution. This includes: Community service, Cooperative extension
service, and Public broadcasting services. (NACUBO)
- Research: All expenditures for activities specifically organized to
produce research outcomes. This includes: Institutes and research centers, and individual
and project research. (NACUBO)
- Scholarships and Fellowships: Expenditures for scholarships and
fellowships in the form of grants to students, resulting either from selection by the
institution or from an entitlement program. (NACUBO)
- Student Services: Funds expended for those activities whose primary
purpose is to contribute to the student's emotional and physical well-being and to his or
her intellectual, cultural, and social development outside the context of the formal
instruction program. This includes: admissions, registrar, cultural events, intramural
athletics, student organizations, student aid administration, student media, and student
health service.
FACULTY RANK:
- Assistant Professor: The individual shall meet the standards which
govern appointment to the rank of Instructor and shall normally possess the commonly
accepted terminal degree in the subject matter area. In addition, the person should
exhibit clear evidence of potential for excellence in teaching, research, or other
scholarly activity. Assistant Professors have faculty status. (LSU System PM-23)
- Associate Professor: The individaul shall meet the standards which
govern appointment and promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor. In addition, he/she
shall have established a consistently good reputation as a scholar and have demonstrated a
high quality of productivity. Normally, the individual will have served at least three
years as an Assistant Professor. Associate Professors are senior members of the faculty.

- Instructor: Individuals appointed to this rank normally should possess
the highest degree requisite in the subject matter area (a minimum of a master's degree).
Each department, in collaboration with the dean of its college, should establish definite
standards to indicate what degree it considers requisite for the rank of Instructor. In
addition to the above academic requirement, the individual should show promise of the
ability to perform successfully the duties (teaching, research, or other scholarly
activity) for which he/she was employed or which may be assigned in the future. The rank
of Instructor carries faculty status. (LSU System PM-23)
- Professor: Individuals with the rank of Professor shall possess all of
the criteria and meet all of the standards for Associate Professor. He/She shall have
demonstrated an excellence in teaching, research, and/or other scholarly activity in the
subject matter area. The faculty member shall have established a commendable academic
reputation through publications or other creative work. Normally, the individual will have
had at least five years of successful service as an Associate Professor. Professors are
senior members of the faculty. (LSU System PM-23)
FIRST-YEAR STUDENT: A student who has completed less than the
equivalent of one full year of undergraduate work; that is, less than 30 semester hours in
a 120-hour degree program. (IPEDS)
FRESHMAN: A first-year undergraduate student. (IPEDS)
FULL-TIME
- Undergraduate: A student enrolled for 12 or more semester credits.
(IPEDS)
- Graduate: A student enrolled for nine or more semester credits. (IPEDS)
GEOGRAPHIC ORIGIN: Students from "other
countries" are non-U.S. citizens; students from "other states" are U.S.
citizens (or resident aliens) whose home address at the time of application for admission
to the University was not in Louisiana; and "Louisiana" studens are U.S.
citizens (or resident aliens) whose home address at the time of application was in
Louisiana. (Budget and Planning)
GRADUATE STUDENT: A student who holds a bachelor's or
first-professional degree, or equivalent, and is taking courses at the postbaccalaureate
level. These students may or may not be enrolled in graduate programs. (IPEDS)
INSTRUCTIONAL FACULTY: Members of the Instruction/Reasearch staff
whose major (more than 50%) regular assignment is instruction, including those with
released time for research. (IPEDS)
NON-DEGREE SEEKING STUDENT: A student enrolled in
courses for credit who is not recognized by the institution as seeking a degree or formal
award. (IPEDS)
PART-TIME STUDENT:
- Undergraduate: A student enrolled for 11 semester credits or less.

- Graduate: A student enrolled for 8 semester credits or less. (IPEDS)
POSTBACCALAUREATE STUDENT: A student with a bachelor's degree who is
enrolled in graduate or first-professional courses. (IPEDS)
PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS (FIRST-PROFESSIONAL STUDENTS): Those students
who are enrolled in programs leading toward a first-professional degree in the fields of
veterinary medicine. (IPEDS)
RACE/ETHNICITY: Categories used to
describe groups to which individuals belong, identify with, or belong in the eyes of the
community. The categories do not denote scientific definitions of anthropological origins.
A person may be counted in only one group. The groups used to categorize U.S. citizens and
resident aliens. (IPEDS)
- American Indian or Alaskan Native: A person having origins in any of the original peoples
of North America and who maintains cultural identification through tribal affiliation or
community recognition. (IPEDS)
- Asian or Pacific Islander: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the
Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or Pacific Islands. This includes
people from China, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands, American Samoa, India, and
Vietnam. (IPEDS)
- Black, non-Hispanic: A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of
Africa (except those of Hispanic origin). (IPEDS)
- Hispanic: A person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central, or South
American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. (IPEDS)
- Nonresident Alien: A person who is not a citizen or national of the
United States and who is in this country on a visa or temporary basis and does not have
the right to remain indefinitely. (IPEDS)
- Race/Ethnicity Unknown: A person who did not select a racial/ethnic
designation, AND the institution finds it impossible to place the person in one of the
aforementioned racial/ethnic categories during established enrollment procedures or in any
post-enrollment identification or verification process. (IPEDS)
- White, non-Hispanic: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of
Europe, North Africa, or the Middle East (except those of Hispanic origin). (IPEDS)
SECOND-YEAR STUDENT: A student who has completed the
equivalent of one year of full-time undergraduate work; that is, at least 30 semester
hours but less than 60 semester hours in a 120-hour program. (IPEDS)
STATE OF RESIDENCES: A person's permanent address as determined by
such evidence as a driver's license or voter registration. For entering freshmen,
residence may be the legal residence of a parent or guardian. (IPEDS)
TENURE: Status of a personnel position, or a person
occupying a position or occupation, with respect to permanence of position. (IPEDS)
TRANSFER STUDENT: A student entering the reporting institution for the
first time but known to have previously attended a postsecondary institution at the same
level (e.g., undergraduate, graduate). The student may transfer with or without credit.

UNDERGRADUATE: A student enrolled in a 4- or 5-year
bachelor's degree program. (IPEDS)
